Lord Provost recognises Association Success

May 15th 2013 will be a day that will feature highly in any history of Glasgow Schools' Football Association for the combination of results that has not been equalled before nor is likely to be repeated again.

That morning, the Primary select squad set out for Edinburgh to compete in the third event of the three that make up the Primary Inter Association Sevens organised by the Scottish Schools' F.A. They travelled with some hope because, although the two teams had finished equal sixth in the first event at Ravenscraig, good performances at Toryglen had brought them up to joint third, albeit 5 points adrift of leaders East Ayrshire and 2 behind Dundee. Team spirit was good and players responded willingly to the coaching of Donald Whitelock and Tom Pool.

By the end of the morning, one team had won their section and the other clinched runners-up in theirs which put them into the top two groups for the final session. Both teams continued to collect the vital points which would determine the final placings and, by the last round of matches, everyone knew that there were still four Associations with a chance of victory. After a dramatic count of the results from all three events, Glasgow Primary won by one point from East Ayrshire with Edinburgh another point behind.

Although we have won on individual days before, this is the first occasion on which Glasgow has triumphed over the three days of this event which is now the established replacement for the previous Wilson Trophy matches which were played at 11-a-side.

We would like to record our thanks to Head Teachers and staffs of the individual schools who nominate children for trials and then support us fully in the subsequent arrangements made. We are also very appreciative of the positive comments which have been made by the parents of the players concerned.

Marc McConnon (Barmulloch), Lewis Graham (Broomhill), Anthony McLaren (Caldercuilt), Scott Dallas (Cranhill), Matthew McLevy, Lee Gemmell and Callum Law (Elmvale), James McLaughlin, Jon Kidson (Highpark), Andrew West (Knightswood), Jordan Bow (Mosspark), Dylan Stirling (Oakwood), Leon Boomer (Quarry Brae), Jordan Critchley, Reece Cathcart (Sandaig), Marc Leonard (St Francis of Assisi), Jay Hunter (St Mirin's), Kieran Docherty ( St Saviour's), Blair Murdoch (Swinton), Sam Duncan (Thorntree), John Wilson (Wellshot).

Association president Tom Pool dashed from Edinburgh to attend the Cameronian Cup Final which, with the kind permission of Celtic F.C., was being held at Celtic Park.

The Lord Provost, who presented the cup to the winners, Bannerman High, was delighted to learn of the Primary success and immediately invited them to attend the City Chambers. If this seemed a good day, even better was to come! Later that evening the Glasgow Under-18 representative team came from behind to win their national trophy on penalties and word came next that one of our individual schools, Bannerman High, had just won the National Shield for Under-15 schools, again through in Edinburgh.

That same team went on to win the British International Schools' Cup.

Needless to say the Lord Provost was delighted to add both the Association Under-18 team and the Bannerman High Under-15s to those invited to the City Chambers and we would like to thank her sincerely for the great interest and encouragement she has shown for our activities.
